The Kyrie Irving case continues to make waves in the NBA. Now LeBron James and Kevin Durant have criticized the vaccination ordinance in New York City, which allows the Nets star to watch home games but not to play himself. The mayor responded with a clear statement.
“Pretty much everyone in the world is confused now. People didn’t understand what was happening at the beginning of the season, but now it’s just stupid,” said Kevin Durant after beating the Nets with 53 points to a 110 :107 win over the New York Knicks.
Irving attended his team’s home game at the arena for the first time this season, but he was only allowed to watch. Because the 29-year-old does not want to be vaccinated against the corona virus, he is not allowed to play for his employer due to a local regulation in New York City.
However, the obligation to provide proof of a vaccination for attending an indoor event was recently lifted. Irving secured courtside tickets for the Knicks game and escorted his teammates into the dressing room at half-time.
“This is ridiculous,” Durant raged. “I don’t get it. It gives the impression that someone is trying to make a statement or use their authority. Everyone here is just looking for attention. I have a feeling that’s what the mayor wants too: attention. That sums it all up No sense. Hope you find a solution soon, Eric.”
KD was addressing New York City Mayor Eric Adams directly. Superstar LeBron James had previously expressed his displeasure with Irving’s status. In a tweet denouncing his current situation in Brooklyn, the Lakers star captioned, “FACT FACT FACT!! It makes ABSOLUTELY ZERO SENSE!!!” At the end of his tweet, LeBron used the hashtag “FreeKyrie”.
Irving has not yet played a home game this season and, as a “part-time player”, has only played 18 away games (25.9 points and 5.4 assists). It is possible that the Corona rules in Brooklyn could be further relaxed in the coming weeks, so that the point guard can play again in home games, but it’s not that far yet.
Mayor Adams responded to LeBron and Durant’s criticism with a simple solution: “Kyrie could play tomorrow. Get vaccinated!”
