Mario Götze and Roger Schmidt will go their separate ways at the end of the season. The coach leaves PSV Eindhoven. Götze had switched to the Dutch club primarily because of him. The 29-year-old now leaves open whether he will stay.

Nfter the announced departure of coach Roger Schmidt, former football world champion Mario Götze is thinking about staying at PSV Eindhoven. It is an open secret that Schmidt and his concept had a significant influence on him when he switched, the 29-year-old said in an interview with Sports Illustrated magazine.

“For me as a player, the coach is the most important person in football,” said Götze. He wants to see how it develops, first of all it’s about ending the current season as successfully as possible.

PSV Eindhoven announced in early February that 55-year-old Schmidt would not be extending his contract, which expired in June, after two years. Götze also switched to the current second in the Eredivisie table in 2020 as a player without a club after he had not received a new contract with Borussia Dortmund. His contract in Eindhoven runs until 2024.

What excites Mario Götze

The attacking midfielder would prefer clubs in Italy, Spain or England over the Bundesliga in future engagements. “I’ve always made it my mission that I really want to win the Champions League,” said Götze. That’s why he wants to play at the highest level in Europe – “preferably in Italy or Spain. The Premier League, with its extremely balanced league, also appeals to me.”

For a return to the Bundesliga, the package of coach and club must be right. “Then that could happen, but it’s not like I’m saying now: I absolutely have to go back to the Bundesliga,” emphasized Götze. Seen from a distance, he really likes the work that Julian Nagelsmann has done and is doing at his stations in the Bundesliga. “Domenico Tedesco is also a very exciting coach with a lot of potential – especially now in Leipzig,” said Götze.
