Ukrainian basketball player Viktoriya Balaban is temporarily leaving her Ukrainian team Prometey for Belgian champion Castors Braine. Balaban, 25, is on the run from the war in Ukraine.

Viktoriya Balaban is no stranger to Castors Braine. The 25-year-old shooting guard eliminated this season with Prometey Castors in the eighth finals of the Eurocup in the women’s basketball.

However, at the end of last month, war broke out in her homeland and she fled. “We were contacted by Viktoriya and her manager at the end of last week,” the club said in a statement.

“She was staying near the Polish border at the time. First, she asked if she could possibly stay with us, in a peaceful country. We welcomed her without hesitation and she can stay as long as she wants. In the meantime, she has joined our A-squad.”

“She had to leave her husband and her father in Ukraine. Her mother has meanwhile arrived in Poland and has the intention to travel on to Belgium. We will also welcome her with open arms.”
