Argentina defined the team to play the Billie Jean King Cup

Team defined for the expected appointment. Mercedes Paz, the captain of Argentina, summoned Paula Ormaechea, Lourdes Carlé, Jazmín Ortenzi, Julia Riera and Solana Sierra to play in Salinas, Ecuador, Group I of the American Zone of the Billie Jean King Cup.

The formerly called Fed Cup, the highest women’s team tennis tournament, now called the Billie Jean King Cup, in honor of the emblematic former player, is back in action on the calendar.

Paz, the coach of the Argentine team, summoned Ormaechea, No. 156 in the WTA world ranking, Carlé (251st), Ortenzi (494th), Riera (547th) and Sierra (680th) to participate in the zone qualifying against other South American rivals.

In the American Zone I they will perform, in addition to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Guatemala.

Last year, Paz summoned Ormaechea, she chose not to perform for Argentina. “I was a player and I understand the situation, because she lives in Europe and preferred not to come; I respect her decision,” the Albiceleste captain had said about that absence. And now I want to have that player.

Due to injury, Argentina suffers the forced loss of its best tennis player, Nadia Podoroska, surprise semifinalist at Roland Garros 2020. The inactivity made her go back a lot in the classification to the former No. 36, now being No. 108 in the world, with 25 years.
