SZ: Sport is…
Ludwig Maurer: …my most important compensation. As a child, I skied and snowboarded extensively. There was a ski lift next to my parents’ house, so we only had to jump out the front door onto the slopes. In summer my favorite hobbies were BMX and of course soccer.
Your current fitness level?
As good as it hasn’t been for a long time. I used the Corona period and trained intensively with my brother. I lost 22 kilos in the process.
Rim upswing or stopover?
refreshment stop. I grew up in a Bavarian inn. And there has always been conviviality here.
Physical education class was for you?
Always a pleasure! I even won silver at the county Olympics in track and field. I was good at handball and basketball because I was always among the best.
Your personal record?
Powerlifting, deadlift 280 kilograms. I’ve been training for this for a year!
Stadium visitors or TV athletes?
Stadium, Straubing Tigers. We have an unbelievably good fan base in Straubing and the Tigers are somehow like the Gallic village. I’m also an ambassador for the club!
Bavaria or sixty?
1860. I was a teenager and witnessed the Lions rise from the Bayernliga through the second to the first division. Werner Lorant, Peter Pacult and Karl-Heinz Wildmoser were still real brands, and somehow the sixties were just wilder and not as smooth as the reds.
Your eternal sports idol?
Walter Rohrl. I am personal friends with him, he lives only eight kilometers away from me. He is often in our restaurant. I don’t know anyone who is so disciplined! For what he’s accomplished, he’s incredibly down to earth.
A formative experience?
First 360 (three-sixty) on a snowboard. I can still remember well when I was in the Kaunertal with TV Kötzting and rode a prepared halfpipe for the first time. A 360 was already well up there at the time.
In which discipline would you be an Olympic champion?
Host. I love my job and really enjoy spoiling guests with food and drink.
Which athlete would you like to swap jerseys with?
I am very happy with my own jersey. But I would love to spend an evening with Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has really achieved a lot!
Under the heading “Formality” the SZ asks people about their affinity for sport every week. Artists, politicians, captains of industry – just no athletes. It would be boring.
