Thiem tests positive for COVID-19 after his first match in 9 months

Dominic Thiemthe 2020 US Open champion, reported Wednesday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 after his first match in more than nine months.

Thiem lost 6-3, 6-4 to Argentina’s Pedro Cachín at the Andalucía Open, a Challenger tour tournament, on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Austrian was sidelined with wrist and hand injuries. His last game was back in June.

On his social networks, Thiem explained that “I started to feel bad and did not have a good night” after dinner on Tuesday, suffering from mild symptoms. He tested positive after a test on Wednesday.

Thiem was the runner-up of the French Open in 2018 and 2019, losing to Rafael Nadal in the finals of both editions. He also succumbed to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final in 2020.

Later in 2020, Thiem captured his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows. He rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Alexander Zverev in a fifth-set tiebreaker in the final.

Having peaked at No. 3 in the rankings, Thiem now sits on the 50th rung.

Another former Grand Slam champion, the Swiss Stan Wawrinkaalso reappeared after an injury at the Andulucía Open and lost in his debut 6-2, 6-4 against the Swedish Elias Ymer.
