Football: Williams Martinez, the former defender of Reims and Valenciennes, killed himself

His long career had led him, after West Bromwich Albion, in England, to L1 in 2008 (7 games with Valenciennes), then to L2 the following season, where he played 17 games with Reims, then coached by Luis Fernandez. 38-year-old Uruguayan defender Williams Martinez killed himself on Saturday. Selected once in the national team, he still played in the Uruguayan second division, in the club of Villa Teresa. He had missed his team’s last games after contracting Covid and had not been able to play since June.

This announcement plunged the whole of Uruguayan football into sadness. “We regret with deep pain and shock the death of Uruguayan player Williams Martinez, wrote the Uruguayan federation on Twitter. Our condolences to your family and friends. As a sign of mourning and to salute his memory, the National League has decided, at the request of the players’ association, to suspend competitions and training for its professional championships this weekend.

“Our souls will kiss, brother, and you will be missed. I love you very much,” also wrote his brother and former professional player, Edgar Martinez. The act of Williams Martinez happened on National Day for Suicide Prevention in Uruguay.
