On April 10, in the basketball hall of the Olympic Center “Ventspils” there will be a 3×3 basketball tour of the Latvian Basketball Union “Open” for both men’s and women’s teams, which will compete for the cups of Karlis Pauls Lasmanis, the champion of the Tokyo Olympic Games in Ventspils.
In the men’s competition, this will be the fourth of five stages on the way to the final of the tour on May 7 in Kandava, where it is planned to play the ticket to the International Basketball Federation World Tour qualification “Challenger” tournament.
The Latvian Basketball Union’s (LBS) “Open” tour for men’s teams has taken three stages. On February 5 in Ropaži and on February 27 in Jelgava, the first place was won by the representatives of “3×3 Jelgava”, but on March 20 in Madona the German quartet “Düsseldorf LFDY” won. A total of 28 units from Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and Ukraine participated. So far, one tournament has taken place for women, with the “RSU” 3×3 basketball players becoming the best in Jelgava.
The final stage of the LBS “Open” tour qualification will take place on April 24 in Ķekava, but the best 12 teams in the overall standings will gather for the final tournament on May 7 in Kandava.
Currently, the men’s finalists would be: 3×3 Jelgava (200 points), Düsseldorf LFDY (180), MSA (140), Kraslava (120), 3×3 Adazi / Bauerfeind (95), Strength Movement ”(90),“ 3×3 M / SrotsMadona.lv ”(90),“ Rīga ”(80),“ BK Jelgava ”(80),“ 3x3Madona / Solartbūve ”(80),“ Kandava / Anzāģe ”(78) and Ādaži 3×3 (69).
For women, the teams are ranked as follows: RSU (100 points), Jugla (80) and RBJSS Rīdzene (70).
The registration of teams is open on the website of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3×3 basketball competition “play.fiba3x3.com”. The maximum number of participants in the men’s competition is 16 teams. Registration is open until Friday, April 8 at 17:00 or until the maximum number of participants is reached. The participation fee is 30 euros per unit.
The organizers of the FIBA 3×3 basketball competition are still developing the World Tour and Challenger tournament system, so the qualifying stages do not have Lite Quest status. The tour will include all five stages, manually summing up the number of points won and determining the finalists. During the tour, players are allowed to change teams, but on May 7, basketball players who have previously represented the team will be allowed to participate in Kandava (three players have a minimum of two such stages, the fourth player a minimum of one stage).
The winners of the prize have been taken care of by the supporters of the tour – LBS, “Sportland”, construction company “Restaurators”, Kandava cafe “Pie Kristapa”, “Kandava kart track”. The competition will take place with the financial support of Ventspils City Municipality. The best Latvian teams in the Ventspils tournament for both men and women will receive invitations to the 2023 World Cup qualifying game Latvia – Serbia on June 30 at Arena Riga.
