Spain, Japan and New Zealand against Costa Rica: DFB captain Manuel Neuer analyzes the group opponents of the German national team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The 0: 6 in the test against Spain in November 2020 is no reason for Neuer to deter.
DFB captain Manuel Neuer (on MagentaTV): “It was clear that we would get a very good opponent from Pot 1. Now it’s Spain where we’ve had negative experiences in the past (0:6 im November 2020, Anm. d. Red.). But I think something like that doesn’t happen twice to us.
We are on the right track with our national team. We tried to usher in a new era under Hansi Flick. We’re looking forward to the Nations League games, they’re good tests in terms of preparation. We are all positive and in good spirits that we will play a successful tournament.”
New to the group: “For us it starts from the beginning. Only wins in this group count for us, we have to be right up there.”
New to favorites: “Especially in tournaments it’s always about the day’s form in the knockout games, you have to be one step ahead. You have to bring the cleverness with you. We haven’t covered ourselves in glory in the recent past.”
