Baseball Bundesliga club Hamburg Stealers wants to advance at least into the playoffs this season. Before the opening games at the Berlin Flamingos on Saturday (6 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.), head coach David Wohlgemuth said: “Compared to last season, we have a larger and broader squad. There is also a very good team spirit.”

In order to reach the round of the best eight clubs, the Hanseatic League must be at least fourth in the northern group, which consists of seven teams. “The Bonn Capitals are definitely the clear favorites again,” said Wohlgemuth and added: “Behind them, I expect a close race between the Paderborn Untouchables, the Dohren Wild Farmers and us.”

The Stealers coach also believes the flamingos are capable of a lot and therefore warned of the first opponent. “They have strengthened considerably with the very experienced but still very strong pitcher Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez, who came from the German champions Heidenheim.”

The Stealers have brought in pitcher Joe Wittig, among others. Strong batsman Tyler Villaroman remained. The Hamburgers are also hoping for the return of pitcher Simon Bäumer from the USA in May.
