Competitions from July 24 and medals from July 27

Competitions will start two days before the opening ceremony. Thus, on Wednesday July 24, 2024, three team sports will open the ball: handball at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Lille, rugby at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis and football in the seven cities hosting the women’s and men’s tournaments. (Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Étienne).

Paris 2024 also specifies that medals will be awarded the day after the opening ceremony. “The calendar was built to experience the Games to the fullest, right from the start! », launch the organizers. On Saturday 27 July, eight sports will see their first finals and give rise to medals: cycling with the women’s and men’s time trials, judo, fencing, diving, rugby, shooting, swimming and skateboarding, which will be the first of the urban sports to enter the scene.

Team athletes highlighted

The organizers want to highlight team sports. To do this, the women’s and men’s finals of field hockey, handball, football, beach volleyball, volleyball, basketball and water polo will be spread over four days, between Thursday August 8 and Sunday August 11, “for a real final bouquet. »

Note that the place that will host the start of basketball competitions is not yet known after the controversy at the Parc des expositions de Versailles.

No event before 7:30 a.m.

In order to make the entire competition accessible, the organizers announce that the events will never start before 7:30 a.m. and will end at a maximum of 11:30 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on Friday and Saturday. The final sessions will give rise, with some exceptions, to a medal ceremony.

The road and Seine events spread over the entire period of the Games

The road events, always very popular, will be distributed throughout the Olympic Games. In cycling, the “time trials” will be contested on D + 1, on Saturday July 27; the triathlon events will take place on D + 4, 5 and 10, i.e. Tuesday July 30, Wednesday July 31 and Monday August 5; the walking competitions will criss-cross the streets of Paris on D + 6 (Thursday 1is August) and D + 12 (Wednesday August 7); the road cycling in-line events will be scheduled for Saturday August 3 and Sunday August 4 (D + 8 and D + 9); the marathon swimming, contested in the waters of the Seine, will be scheduled for Thursday August 8 and Friday August 9 (D+13 and D+14). Finally, the marathon events (women and men) will take place on the last weekend of the Games.

Trials on the Place de la Concorde

Place de la Concorde will be a central location for these Paris 2024 Games.
