Quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw to receivers at halftime at the University of Michigan spring game in front of NFL scouts on Saturday.
Kaepernick was invited to Michigan by coach Jim Harbaugh, who mentored him with the San Francisco 49ers, and was honorary captain for the spring game. He was joined by producer Spike Lee, who is filming a documentary about Kaepernick as he seeks another chance on an NFL team.
Kaepernick was not made available to the media, but Jeanna Trotman, a reporter for local news station WXYZ, spoke with him on the field about his decision to pitch on Saturday.
“We’re always here to pass,” Kaepernick told Trotman. “I came here to show that I can still do it. It’s one of the questions my agent keeps asking me, so we want to make sure we can come, show everyone that I can still play, still throw. »
He said he still believes he can make a team better and help a team win games. NFL reporter Josina Anderson reported Friday that Kaepernick is open to accepting a backup role if that’s what it takes to facilitate an NFL return.
While in Ann Arbor, Kaepernick spent time with the Michigan players.
Kaepernick told Trotman on the field that he would be willing to do interviews and a workout if an NFL team was willing to host him. He hoped this training session would show some scouts that he has stayed fit and can still play.
