Call for Gorter in Ajax goal: “Looks like Onana is doing it on purpose”

Andre Onana is no longer a shadow of the goalkeeper he was before his doping suspension, say Marco van Basten and Jan van Halst. The analysts do not find the Cameroonian convincing and did not see him perform adequately against FC Groningen (1-3) against the goal.

“Onana’s head is somewhere else. That can’t be any other way, if you have scored so well before…”, says Van Halst at the Ziggo program Rondo. He sees no other option for Erik ten Hag for the time being than to continue with Onana under the bar. “He was almost called one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Ajax is imprisoned. Who else should they position?”

Kees van Wonderen, who is also at the table, argues for Jay Gorter between the posts. The two worked together at Go Ahead Eagles, before the goalie switched to Ajax. “I would draft him. You have to work with those guys. Onana is potentially a top goalkeeper. I can’t say what’s wrong with him, but he has had better phases.”

Van Wonderen and Van Halst are supported by Van Basten. San Marco judges Onana harshly. “It seems like he’s doing it on purpose,” he responds. “In this case he hasn’t played for a year, but if young guys go abroad and don’t play for six months or a year, you’re gone. You have to handle it very well. You see what it does, a year do not play.”
