The Dutch national team concluded the turbulent week in the Wagener Stadium on Sunday afternoon, following the research report, with the second victory over the United States in two days. The Orange squad won 10-0, thanks in part to three goals from Yibbi Jansen. It is the biggest win ever in the women’s Pro League.
In contrast to last Saturday (3-0 win), the Netherlands expressed the enormous difference in power in large numbers this time. Playing hockey, the Orange was almost laughably much better than the poor US. A plus for the Netherlands was also that the penalty corner ran a lot better than Saturday. Still, the Orange could have scored much more often. A result of 15-0 or more would have been appropriate.
With the win, the Dutch national team further distances itself from competitors Germany and Argentina in the Pro League ranking. The Orange is at the top with seventeen points from six matches. Argentina has won all matches so far, but The lioness only came into action four times and have played five points less than the Netherlands and two games less.
Pien Sanders captain
In comparison with the first confrontation with the US, national coach Jamilon Mülders made some changes. Pleun van der Plas took the place of Marloes Keetels in midfield. Marente Barentsen also played in midfield again instead of in the back. So there was room in the rear for Tessa Clasener, who took the place in the selection of Stella van Gils.
The captain’s armband hung on the arm of Pien Sanders this match. On Saturday Frédérique Matla was appointed captain, last February in the two games against Spain that role was assigned to Lidewij Welten. The decision by national coach Jamilon Mülders not to designate a definitive replacement for the injured Eva de Goede for the time being, cannot be seen separately from the change in the hierarchy that is going on within Orange. Under the wing of Alyson Annan, the older players were clearly the leaders, but behind the scenes the middle group is increasingly stirring.
Just like Saturday, Bloemendaal captain Sanne Caarls came into action with the United States. It was her second international match for the US. Caarls was previously part of the potentials led by national coach Alyson Annan, but did not play a single international match for the Orange.
The opening goal came after nine minutes of hockey from the second penalty corner of the game. At the head of the circle, Frédérique Matla usually gets the confidence of Mülders. Now that she was not inside the lines, it was Yibbi Jansen’s turn. Her first drag ended directly on the left of the board: 1-0.
10-0
Halfway through the first quarter it was a bit of a shock for the Netherlands when Josine Koning saved the 1-1 with a save on a low shot by Olivia Bent-Cole. It was a rare attack by the United States, which, like Saturday, erected a wall and mainly wanted to prevent a monster result.
The Netherlands dominated and regularly encountered goalkeeper Kelsey Bing. At the start of the second quarter, the Orange lifted the lead to 2-0 thanks to a striking penalty corner by Renée van Laarhoven, her first goal in Orange. Even before the break, Jansen won the 3-0 from the sixth corner of the Orange.
Pearls of goals
The 4-0 halfway through the third quarter was brilliant by Matla, who shot the ball into the roof of the goal with a wonderful swipe. Not much later Joosje Burg wrote the 5-0 to her name. Shortly afterwards, Matla shot hard in the 6-0 with her backhand, again a pearl of a goal.
In the last quarter, after a wonderful solo, Jansen served teammate Lidewij Welten (7-0). Attacker Freeke Moes signed for the 8-0. Burg made the 9-0, after a beautiful pass from Xan de Waard. In the last minute, Jansen determined the final score at 10-0 with her third goal.
Next week, the Netherlands will continue the Pro League campaign with two away games in India. Only seven players from this selection will participate: Yibbi Jansen, Kyra Fortuin, Renée van Laarhoven, Marente Barentsen, Stella van Gils, Fiona Morgenstern and Tessa Clasener. The rest of the team is filled with talents and top league players. It will probably be a lot more difficult for Orange than against the United States.
