The International Cycling Union UCI has given the green light for a system whereby the tire pressure can be adjusted during the race. Especially for matches like Paris-Roubaix, this could be a game changer.
Matej Mohoric won Milan-Sanremo thanks to his “dropper” (which allowed him to lower his saddle), the winner of Paris-Roubaix next weekend may thank his Scope Atmoz.
Scope designed a system in which a kind of pump around the hub can empty or fill the tires with air. In this way, the ideal tire pressure (which you can read on your computer) can be set under any circumstance.
This system is especially useful for races such as Paris-Roubaix. After all, you prefer a lower pressure on the cobblestones than on the asphalt. According to developer Scope, that could make a difference of up to 30 Watts.
The UCI has studied the system and has decided that there is no reason not to approve it. It is not very cheap for the time being (3,300 euros), but it could soon make the difference between profit and loss.
