NFL: A victory signed Derrick Henry ends the streak of the Bills

NASHVILLE — Derrick Henry scored his third touchdown of the game with 3:05 remaining as the Tennessee Titans held off the Buffalo Bills with a 34-31 victory Monday night.

The Titans stopped Josh Allen on a quarterback sneak on fourth down in the final seconds of the game.

The Bills, who had won their last four outings, brought the ball to the Titans’ three-line. They would have forced the holding of an extension by succeeding in a placement, but they decided to go for the victory, in vain.

The ball was first placed short on the first down on a run from Allen. On fourth down, the Bills quarterback got behind his center to grab the ball, but the Titans defensive line closed the door.

The Titans (4-2) got the ball back with 12 seconds left and they were able to get the celebrations started.

Henry started the day as the NFL leader in rushing yards. He finished the game with 143 rushing yards, hitting 100 yards for the fifth straight game. It’s the longest such streak in the NFL since DeMarco Murray’s streak was eight in 2014.

Henry, the 2020 Offensive Player of the Year, rushed for 76, 3 and 13 yards. It was his sixth career touchdown from at least 70 yards, which ranks him third in history in that regard, passing Barry Sanders and OJ Simpson.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill added a ground major against the Bills, who had the third-best run defense this season.

Harold Landry made two of the Titans’ three sacks and Kevin Byard intercepted a pass.

The Bills (4-2) extended their NFL record by leading at the half for the 15th consecutive game. Their defense, however, had its worst day of the season.

Allen finished the game with 353 passing yards and three touchdowns. He joined Tommy Sweeney, Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley in the end zone.

The Bills quarterback also caught a pass from slotback Dawson Knox on a two-point convert.

Allen edged Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the most total touchdowns with 108 majors in 49 starts. Rodgers had 107 total touchdowns for a quarterback in his first 50 NFL starts. Allen also became the first quarterback in history to throw at least 80 touchdown passes and rush for at least 25 touchdowns in his first 50 games in the league.
