End of the big game

Last Sunday, April 10, the 2021/2022 big game hunting season ended in Gipuzkoa. After eight months of the hunting season, it is possible to bend the upward catch curve, which had generated six consecutive campaigns with a record of catches and which in this campaign has dropped to 2,148 wild boars hunted, compared to 2,644 captured in the previous campaign. The roe deer, like the wild boar, has suffered a notable decrease in the number of captures, reaching 1,189 roe deer captures compared to the 1,656 roe deer captured last season.

In short, great work by the big game hunters to stabilize the populations of wild boar and roe deer, which without their action would generate an unsustainable situation in relation to damage to agriculture and road accidents.

Concentration in defense of the quail

The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Hunting Federation (RFEC) has announced that it will meet on March 21 at the doors of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) to demand that the proposal be withdrawn to declare the quail as an “endangered species” of the next Flora and Fauna Committee, which would mean the end of their hunt. In this concentration, the RFEC and the autonomous hunting federations will demand the dismissal of Minister Teresa Ribera for what this new deliberate attack on the hunting sector implies since, with this declaration, the quail would cease to be a hunting species in our country.

This concentration will be attended by the president of the RFEC, presidents and directors of all the Autonomous Hunting Federations, as well as other entities in the sector and hunters in the country. During the claim, all members of the MITECO Flora and Fauna Committee on April 22 will be reminded that in the SEO-BirdLife request on which this declaration will be based, the hunting sector has not been taken into account, Ministry of Agriculture, nor to the scientific community. In fact, the MITECO Scientific Committee has deliberately omitted the scientific data from the quail studies that have been carried out in Spain over the last 20 years.

According to the President of the Spanish Hunting Federation, “with this new concentration we will again remind the Government of Spain that the orange tide that took to the streets on March 20 to demand the end of anti-hunting policies must be heard. We will not allow another attack against our sector and we are going to show it to them.”
