Steve Simon is not the kind of boss to crumble under the weight of pressure.
Particularly determined when he decided, last December, to suspend all the WTA tournaments planned in China following the Peng Shuai case, despite the strong economic stakes, the boss of the Tennis Players Association warned during from an interview to Tennis Podcast that he was not going to sit idly by after Wimbledon’s decision to exclude all Russian and Belarusian athletes from its next edition.
“The Wimbledon decision goes against the Grand Slam rules, as well as the Grand Slam agreement that we (the WTA) have. It is a violation of our point of view in both situations. The LTA (British Tennis Federation, editor’s note) organizes events in agreement with the WTA and the decisions are in violation of the WTA regulations with regard to the registration of athletes. I think you will see some strong reactions from us, but their nature and how far we will go are yet to be determined. »
