There were 95 participants at this year’s Greenland badminton championships, which were held in Aasiaat’s sports hall during the Easter holidays.
Tina Rafaelsen became the big winner at the championships when she became triple Greenland champion. She defeated Emilie Sørensen in the final in singles, won a gold medal in doubles with her little sister, Thrune Rafaelsen, and the mixed doubles with Christian Højen Bisgaard.
– It is a great achievement as I have always dreamed of winning three of the official tuukkaq medals. I had imagined that I would one day be a triple winner, but it happens much earlier than I expected, she tells Sermitsiaq.AG.
She is especially happy to win gold in doubles with her 16-year-old sister.
– We have set ourselves a goal to win GM together since we were children, so it is so great to win with her in doubles. And it has been a long time since a female player has won three double golds, so it is very great to experience that, says Tina Rafaelsen, who is also happy that many young players did well at the championships.
Many exciting matches
Jens-Frederik Nielsen again became Greenland’s champion in men’s singles, while he also took gold in men’s doubles with Sequssuna Schmidt.
– It was an exciting GM with many close and good matches. There is a good mix of good experienced players as well as many young people who show promising pace and who train hard so it bodes well for the future. The players must now go home to their clubs and continue the good work they are already doing with their club coaches, says national coach Rune Svenningsen.
