Today, all the Danish men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Championships, which are played in Madrid. In addition to many Danish victories, the second day at the European Championships offered a comeback from Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, a Danish showdown and a walkover for world No. 1, Viktor Axelsen. Read much more about today’s matches here.

Day number two at the European Championships went really well with Danish glasses, and tomorrow awaits the quarter finals, where Denmark is represented by 12 constellations.

Today’s closest match was played by Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, who was down with match balls in the second set. Fortunately, “HK” managed to keep a cool head in the decisive duels and he ended up winning the match over Tobias Kuenzi 17-21, 26-24, 21-12.

The narrow victory for Vittinghus, however, cost a raised index finger from assistant national coach Jakob Høi.

– I have to mention Hans, who manages to fight his way out of some match balls. I know he’s sitting with a smile and saying he did what it took to keep playing. But it is also a raised finger that you have to be ready if you want to win and further in the tournament, it sounds from Høi.

Tomorrow, 36-year-old Vittinghus will meet Frenchman Toma Junior Popov, who is fifth-seeded at the European Championships.

Another exciting match that took place in Madrid was the Danish showdown between Mia Blichfeldt and Julie Dawall Jakobsen. A really good match, if you ask Jakob Høi.

– It was great with an internal, good match that showed some good competition between the two well-playing girls, says Høi.

It was not only Mia Blichfeldt who played further in the women’s singles category. Last year’s silver winners Line Christophersen and Line Kjærsfeldt did the same. The three girls have fortunately ended up in their quarterfinals tomorrow and here it must be said that on paper it is Line Kjærsfeldt who gets the toughest resistance. She will meet three-time world champion Carolina Marin, who has just returned to the badminton court after a long injury period.

Although Luís Enriwue Penalver played at home in Spain, he was not strong enough to defeat the defending European champion, Anders Antonsen, who confidently won the match 21-13, 21-15. Tomorrow, second-seeded Antonsen will play the quarterfinals against Nhat Nguyen.

Viktor Axelsen had an easy and relaxing day in the office, because his opponent Max Weisskirchen withdrew before the start of the match – and thus Axelsen secured a place in tomorrow’s quarterfinals, where he meets Thomas Rouxel from France.

It was not only in the men’s singles category that the Danish players ran with the victory. In the mixed doubles category, both Danish constellations won without problems. Mathias Christiansen / Alexandra Bøje only had to spend 22 minutes defeating Philip Birker / Katharina Hochmeir 21-11, 12-11. It took Mikkel Mikkelsen / Rikke Søby six minutes longer to win their match over Pawel Smilowski / Wiktoria Adamek. Tomorrow, the latter Danes will face fierce opposition when they face the first-seeded English couple Lauren Smith / Marcus Ellis.

Also in the Danish men’s and women’s doubles, there were only victories to be found. Amalie Schulz / Christine Busch, Amalie Magelund / Freja Ravn and Sara Thygesen / Maiken Fruergaard won their matches in two sets and thus the three Danish women’s doubles are ready for the quarter finals tomorrow. The same is European Championship debutants Jeppe Bay / Lasse Mølhede, who won over 2x Grimley 21-18, 21-14.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day where the Danish players can advance to the semi-finals, which will secure them a European Championship medal.

– I look forward to the quarterfinals tomorrow, because tomorrow it will be a battle for medals. While some have tried it before, I know there are some for whom it means a great deal. So it’s clear we’ll have to go out and talk to some of the players about what size it is when there are European Championship medals at stake.

Remember that you can watch the quarter finals live on TV2 from 16:30.
