He could not become the ‘7-7-7 agent’ when he was eliminated in the cup semifinal but Super Amara Bera Bera, without having achieved it, is a true super champion. And it is that despite this setback, the incredible number achieved by the women from San Sebastian after their victory this Sunday can only be described as extraordinary. A triumph that has catapulted them to twenty-one titles throughout their history since they won the first in 2007 . Because yes, this club has become accustomed to winning: 8 Leagues, 6 Cups and 7 Super Cups spread over fifteen years of authentic success in sporting and personal matters. Three decades in which the entity based in Bidebieta has gone from being just another team in the competition to becoming the best and a benchmark for the rest.

To see the beginnings of the prodigious era, you have to go back to the 2006/07 season, although it is true that the then-named Akaba Bera Bera had already begun to rub shoulders with the handball jet-set some time ago. Although not with such good results, of course. After losing the Super Cup in Torrente (Valencia) against CB Ribarroja (25-22), the Gipuzkoans took revenge in the cup final in L’Eliana -they had just fallen in four previously- with the same score but in reverse to thus add the first title in its history. That 22-25 on April 1 with Tati Garmendia as coach meant planting the first seed that would later bear great fruit. In fact, it didn’t take long for Bera Bera to increase the harvest because a few months later the first Super Cup arrived. It was the 07/08 campaign when in front of their fans they beat Ribarroja (21-18) under the orders of Reyes Carrere, also coach in the second Cup won by the club in Alicante against Elda (19-25).

A two-year impasse

After winning two Cups and a Super Cup, it took two years to win again. Although the wait was worth it. Because after a first league runner-up finish on 11/12, 12/13 came to become historic thanks to the hat-trick achieved after crushing an extinct Itxako in the Super Cup (42-18) and being the best both in the Copa de Porriño -they beat Rocasa by the minimum with an exhibition by Matxalen Ziarsolo- as in the League, where they were ahead of Elche.

Already in 13/14 Imanol Álvarez took over on the bench and did not want to be less than his predecessor, so Bera Bera would once again take over another treble. To do this, they beat Rocasa first in the Super Cup held in Gasca (25-24) and then in the Alcobendas Cup (21-26), to finally round off the course by winning the League at home against Alicante (32-18) . When the summer came, the coach from Ermuarra left the team.

Thus, his position for 14/15 was occupied by Aitor Etxaburu, who as soon as he arrived won the Super Cup in Guadalajara again with the Canary Islands in front (23-20). But the man from Eibar, European champion as a player for Elgorriaga Bidasoa, was dismissed in March of that year to make way for Montse Puche, who arrived and kissed the saint. He won the League -the third- after giving a fresh air to the team before entering the Olympus of the club the following season (15/16), when he was the protagonist of the third and last triplet achieved to date.

That squad made a year to remember in the farewells of Pinedo and Ziarsolo by winning the Super Cup by the minimum in Gasca (18-17) to Rocasa and going back to the Canary Islands in the League after chaining eighteen consecutive games without losing. Before, they were crowned Cup champions in Porriño by beating Zuazo in the final (33-17).

From then on, the Super Amara won at least one title every season. In 16/17 the Super Cup, in 17/18 the League on the last day -both with Puche- and in 18/19 Super Cup and Cup in the return of Imanol. The last thing has already been the three Leagues, the one from 19/20 that was won in full confinement and the one from last year in Gasca behind an empty door, as well as the one from Gijón yesterday.
