The 2022 National Universiade held in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, had a sad episode on Saturday, May 14, due to the death of an athlete. David Alejandro Gómez Flores, judoka representative of the University of Guadalajara (UDG), died at the age of 24 after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest.
Through a statement, the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) confirmed the unfortunate news and sent its condolences to family and friends of David Gómez. The institution pointed out that the martial artist he fainted and lost his life moments after his involvement in the category of more than 100 kilos. After being assisted in the facilities, the judoka He was taken by ambulance to the Specialty Medical Center., where he entered the intensive care area. Dr. Armando Mondragón from the UDG explained that Gómez Flores arrived at the hospital with vital signs, but the doctors could not do much to save his life.
“He began to feel dizzy, to feel bad. He told the referee to stop, he wanted to get up, he couldn’t, and that’s when we came in. Doctors from different teams collaborate in care following resuscitation protocols. Maneuvers continued in the hospital, resuscitation protocols and he died minutes later, ”he said.
Various educational institutions that participate in the National Universiade shared their condolences as well as CONADE. After what happened with David Gómez, the National Council for Educational Sports (CONDDE) decided suspend judo in all categories of said event.
