On June 27th, book author Claus Melchior from Munich will be a guest in the former consumer goods building of the Alte Schmelz in St. Ingbert. Melchior is the author of the book Baseball. Cultural History of an American Sport”. However, the event organized by TV St. Ingbert’s Devils baseball department is not a classic reading,

but has a relatively exotic-looking connection as a content orientation. At first glance, baseball and industrial history have little in common. First and foremost, Claus Melchior wants the day to be about talking to the audience about baseball.

Claus Melchior is a bookseller, lives in Munich and, as a baseball fan, with his book in German he wrote “the book that I myself was looking for in vain”. What baseball has to do with industrial history, he will explain in his lecture in St. Ingbert after a tour of the Alte Schmelz. He will also discuss the origins of baseball and individual anecdotes and portraits of players featured in his book.

In the previous tour of the Alte Schmelz site, Klaus Friedrich will point out a few points of contact and focus on the connections to the immediate present.
The entire event (guided tour & lecture) is free of charge. French-speaking participants can also participate. Translation is provided. However, advance registration is requested, as the number of places for the tour is limited to around 30 people. You can register by sending an email to
[email protected].
It starts at 5 p.m. with the guided tour through the Alte Schmelz, at around 6:30 p.m. the lecture by Claus Melchior begins after the guided tour.
The event is, so to speak, the cultural part of the Franco-German project “Baseball crosses borders”, which the Devils of TV St. Ingbert are organizing in Sarreguemines and St. Ingbert this year.

As part of the “Baseball and Industrial History” series, there will be a similar event on June 18th in Sarreguemines at the “Moulin de la Blies” museum, where Gaétan Alibert, author of the baseball book “Une histoire populaire du Baseball”, will travel from Paris . There, too, the author’s lecture is introduced by a previous tour of the former ceramics factory. You should also register for this event in advance.

On their website www.devils-igb.de, the St. Ingbert Devils regularly provide information about news about the project.
