Vanhaezebrouck coached the Buffalos for the first time from May 2014 to September 2017. The West Fleming gave the club its first (and so far) only league title in 2015 and wintered with Gent (the first Belgian club in fifteen years) in the Champions League. In the autumn of 2017 there was a break and shortly afterwards he moved to Anderlecht. Vanhaezebrouck was fired there at the end of 2018. Afterwards he was without a club for a while and worked as an analyst.
Vanhaezebrouck immediately brought continuity and stability to the Buffalos, who won the Belgian Cup this season and emerged as the winner of the Europe Play-offs. In Europe, there was a winter, followed by an elimination in the eighth finals of the Conference League against PAOK.
