The councilor of the Popular Group in the Guadalajara City Council, Eladio Freijo, criticized this Friday that the “passivity and inaction” of the mayor, Alberto Rojo, supported by the three councilors of Ciudadanos, “continues to relegate sport to the background allowing the city continues to lose sporting opportunities and events”.
In a statement, Freijo lamented that the first mayor “is harming the sport of Guadalajara only because it was one of the areas in which the Popular Party bet the most in previous mandates, turning Guadalajara into a European City of Sport and reporting millions of euros for business and the capital’s economy”.
In his opinion, the “disinterest” of the mayor and the Councilor for Sports, Evaristo Olcina, has meant that this summer the absolute volleyball teams will no longer be seen. Nor will the TT Rally take place, which came to be called ‘Ciudad de Guadalajara’, and which brought together hundreds of runners as it was one of the tests included in the national championship; nor the Cross Country Championship that was also traditionally held in Guadalajara.
To this is added the suspension of the Triathlon and the march of the Cuban athletics team that had the city as the center of its training on the slopes of the Fuente de la NiƱa as well as the Athletics Meeting. “Not to mention futsal, handball, fencing, table tennis, badminton or basketball championships,” said the mayor.
In addition, the Popular Group councilor has stressed that “at least six clubs have not received subsidies since last year.” Meanwhile, “the Councilor for Sports has been receiving a public salary for three years, hiding behind the pandemic but ignoring the maintenance of sports facilities and destroying everything built until 2019.”
