At the age of 7, Dorny became enthusiastic about judo. Since the age of 14 he has been fighting in the German Judo League. At the age of 17 he fought for the first time in the first edition of the Judo Bundesliga (PSV Rostock). At the age of 18 he obtained a black belt in judo. Dorny has been several times judo champion in Berlin. She was runner-up for Germany in the individual ranking, several times winner of the national ranking tournament and she has countless international successes to her credit. In 2005 she qualified for the European Judo Championships, but she was unable to compete due to injury. Dorny was a box athlete at the Berlin Olympic Training Center as well as the German Judo Federation (DJB). Dorny studied at the Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportschule (SLZB). With her former first division club, JC Wiesbaden, she won bronze in the team championship.

In 2016 Dorny started sumo training and in the same year she became German champion, winning bronze at the European Championships and placing fifth at the World Championships. In 2017 she received the rank of shodan (first dan) in sumo wrestling. In her sumo career, Dorny became a multiple-time German champion (individual and open weight), secured fifth place at the 2017 World Games, and won silver at the 2019 US Open in Los Angeles ( California).

Dorny won her MMA debut as an amateur at the 2015 German (GEMMAF) Championships. That same year she was nominated for the IMMAF World Championships in Las Vegas, winning bronze in her international debut. She then demonstrated her consistency by winning another bronze medal at the IMMAF European Championships in Birmingham. In subsequent years, she participated in the IMMAF European Championships (2016 European runner-up)[2]and at the IMMAF World Championships (2016 world runner-up, 2017 bronze).[3][4]In 2018 she took her performance to the next level and became European champion.[5]and worldwide[6]on his first try. This rare feat made her the first German European champion and the first German world champion in the featherweight division.

After winning the European Championship and the World Championship, Dorny made her professional debut in front of her home crowd on June 29, 2019 at the GMC20 in Berlin against Miriam Santana Ramos. She defeated Ramos in the first round by TKO (ground and pound). This fight was also the first GMC women’s fight broadcast on FreeTV. She had her second fight at GMC22 on October 12, 2019 against Mariam Tatunashvili, which she also won by TKO (ground and punch) in the second round.

In addition to her sports career, Dorny works as a media scientist, journalist, and on-air reporter and presenter.[7]She graduated in journalism and corporate communication in 2013. In 2017 she completed her master’s degree in media studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

As of January 2020, Dorny hosts her own podcast, “WOMEN HIT HARDER – The Female Power Podcast by MMA World Champion Julia Dorny”, regularly posting new episodes. Among the guests who passed through her space were the actors Jürgen Vogel and Ken Duken, the boxer Axel Schulz, the world boxing champion Regina Halmich and the editor-in-chief of ICON Inga Griese, twin marathon runners Anna and Lisa Hahner, and Olympic champions Kevin Kuske, Matthias Steiner, and Eric Franke.

In April 2020 she was appointed to the IMMAF “Athlete’s Commission”.[8]
