The 15-year-old girl from Almeria Macarena Fernandezbelonging to the municipal sports schools and the club Mercapaintingsgot the gold in the Andalusian U-17 Championship played last weekend in Los Palacios (Seville). His training partners, Marcos Montoya, Javier Basilio and Ángel Fernández achieved a meritorious 5th place in the men’s singles.
A total of five players (Macarena, Marcos, Javi, Ángel and the young sub 15 Asier Torres) attended the most important event on the Andalusian scene together with their coach Juan Manuel Fernandez Quiles in search of a good result that reflected the effort made after a long season.
Macarena Fernández started as the top seed in the women’s singles and after a perfect competition he got a new gold to his showcases without giving up a single set defeating the local Angela Jiménez in the final by 21-18/21-16. In addition, she teamed up with María Ojeda from Seville, once again climbing to the top of the podium and winning all her matches by two sets to nil.
There was not so much luck in the men’s singles where after excellent first rounds with prestigious victories such as the one won by Javier Basilio against the 4th seed, José Antonio Serrano from Malaga (11-21/21-18/21-12) or Angel Fernandez against Mario del Moral from Jaen (21-11/22-20) and after the Almeria round of 16 clash between Asier and Marcos with victory for the latter in the tiebreaker, the quarterfinal round arrived where there was three Almerian among the eight finalists although in the end they were unlucky and had to settle for 5th place.
The next appointment for the mercapinturas players (federated) will be next week with the Andalusian sub 15 championship in Benalmadena, where Asier will look for a difficult medal; and the international of Austria under 17, where Macarena will attend with the Andalusian expedition in search of climbing positions in the European ranking.
