Maris Strombergs, Maris Strombergs, Maris Strombergs – the Olympic champion! – Latvian sports fans still remember well-known television sports commentator Mārs Rīmenis’ emotional report from Beijing, when the 21-year-old Valmieri crossed the finish line in the BMX final at the 2008 Olympics and wrote his name in golden letters in the history of this sport. In 2008, BMX made its Olympic debut, and Stromberg became the first Olympic champion. After four years in London, he repeated his success.
There was also hope for a third gold in 2016 in Rio, but the Brazilian track was not successful for Mari – he had to accept being left out of the number of semi-finalists. In November 2018, the two-time Olympic champion announced the end of his professional sports career.
