HAVANA, July 4 (Xinhua) — The Cuban athletes who participated in the first Guadeloupe 2022 Caribbean Games arrived in Havana on Monday, after placing the delegation in the highest position in the general medal table by country.
At the José Martí International Airport, in this Cuban capital, the athletes were welcomed by officials of the Cuban Government, as well as representatives of the national sports movement.
With 21 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze medals, Cuba imposed its regional leadership in the first multi-sport event for the nation after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Caribbean country presented 58 athletes in six of the seven sports called by the organizers, as well as in 60 of the 67 events in competition.
Among the most outstanding results for the triumph of the Cuban delegation, swimming stood out with nine gold medals, followed by judo with five, in addition to several titles contributed by athletics, cycling and the men’s futsal team.
Through his Twitter account, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel praised the performance of the athletes in the multi-sport event, considering that “Cuba dressed the Caribbean in luxury.”
“The quality of Cuban sports and the country’s athletic reserve was present in the face of larger future commitments,” said the president, who congratulated the members of the Cuban delegation and in particular the multi-medallist swimmer Andrea Becalli.
The delegations of Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica ranked behind Cuba in the final medal table of the first Caribbean Games. The end
