It was at the end of the suspense that the match was decided. The 21-year-old Grisonne caused a sensation by beating the American Danielle Collins (6-7, 6-3, 7-6) in the 1st round of the Ladies Open Lausanne on Tuesday evening.
Simona Waltert (154 WTA) knew how to enter her match perfectly. Above all, she took advantage of the frustration of the world No 7, who got angry several times after missed balls. She gently hit her face with her racquet as the Swiss quietly went for her fifth game of the third set. While the American looked at the ground or threw her racquet, Simona Waltert clenched her fist.
Still, there were times when Danielle Collins played at the speed she’s known for. In these same phases of play, Simona Waltert struggled. She did not necessarily manage to return the balls of the American player. But in front of a Lausanne public won over to her cause, the Grisonne knew how to play intelligently. She varied her strokes to prevent Collins from finding her rhythm. Above all, she never gave up on her match and knew how to remobilize in hot moments.
More than 3 hours in full dodger later, the hierarchy was betrayed and Waltert reached the next round of the WTA 250 tournament, for which she benefited from a wild card.
Jet Bencic
In the evening, Belinda Bencic (WTA 13) got scared but ended up winning against the Frenchwoman Diane Parry (WTA 77). Nearly two months after bringing down the Czech Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros, the Frenchwoman almost offered herself another choice victim. She pocketed the first set after breaking Bencic twice. The Saint-Galloise answered him in the second set, before unfolding in the third set, despite a new break from the first game. On arrival, she needed 2h21 to close the deal (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
In the round of 16, Bencic will meet Susan Bandecchi (WTA 141) in a 100% Swiss duel. As for Simona Waltert, she will challenge the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa (WTA 126).
