Honduran becomes champion of roller basketball tournament in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR.- Dreams are there to be fulfilled and as proof of this is the history of the Honduran Jeffrey Mejiawho recently became champion of the league of basketball on wheels with the Quezaltepeque in El Salvador.

At 21 years of age, Mejía became the first catracho to play the sport outside the country, and was also the first to win a title away from his homeland.

With an outstanding performance by Mejía on the court, Quezaltepeque managed to win the Amílcar Durán National Tournamentwhich was organized by the Salvadoran Wheelchair Basketball Association (ASABESIR)which consisted of the dispute of seven days for a month and a half.

Four teams participated in the contest, four male and one female, with the Honduran team Quezaltepeque being the big winner.

In the grand final, the team where Jefrey Mejía plays won 37-31 over ASABESIR, with the compatriot being one of the great figures of the duel.

“For me as a person and athlete with a disability it is a great achievement, because it is not paid because there is no support from the sports organization in our country, I came to El Salvador thanks to my family who supported me and the Paralympic committee that helped me. helped with some travel expenses. I play in San Pedro Sula with the San Pedro Thunder team”, Mejía began by recounting to THE HERALD after the achievement achieved in cuscatlecas lands.

Likewise, the 21-year-old from San Pedro Sula called on young people to never give up and to fulfill their dreams through sports.

“My goal in life has always been to motivate young people who never give up and who fight for their dreams. Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it and fight for it. You have to show that there are also good Paralympic athletes in Honduras.”

As a result of his great performance in the Salvadoran basketball tournament, Mejía received the award for the best international player of the contest, putting Honduras at the top in a discipline that deserves greater support from the sports authorities in the country.
