On Monday, BYU basketball received a major commitment from Noah Waterman, the move from Detroit Mercy. Waterman, who spent time at Detroit Mercy and Niagara, is a career 44% three-point shooter. He also averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game during his college career. Waterman is cited at 6’11 and has at least two more years of eligibility.
After a 2022 season in which BYU narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament, coach Mark Pope and his team have been working tirelessly to improve the Cougars’ roster for next season. Additionally, BYU is preparing for the future when it enters the Big 12 in 2023. With the addition of Noah Waterman, BYU has used all of its purses for next season. Today we take an updated look at the 2022-2023 BYU men’s basketball roster.
BYU lost three seniors to graduation last year and six players entered the NCAA transfer portal since the end of last season.
Quit Players
These are the players who were on the roster last season, but will not be on the roster for the 2022-23 season.
- Alex Barcello (Diploma)
- Te’Jon Lucas (Bachelor)
- Richard Harward (baccalauréat)
- Gavin Baxter (Transfer Portal)
- Hunter Erickson (transfer portal)
- Jeremy DowDell (Transfer Portal)
- Nate Hansen (Transfer Portal)
- Caleb Lohner (portail de transfert)
- Seneca Knight (transfer portal)
- Paola Winitana (Mission)
BYU has seen higher than normal turnover this offseason. However, roster turnover is not uncommon in this era of college basketball. With the transfer portal and immediate eligibility for first-time transfers, most schools are losing more players to the portal each year. BYU fans should expect more players to move after each season.
Returning players (name, position, eligibility)
- Trey Stewart – Garde – SO
- Atiki Ally Atiki – Striker – SO
- Spencer Johnson – Garde – RS
- Trevin Knell – Garde – SR
- Fousseyni Traoré – Forward – SO
- Gideon George – Striker – RS
- Casey Brown – Garde – SO
BYU has a core of young forwards it can lean on as it prepares for the Big 12 in Fousseyni Traore and Atiki Ally Atiki. BYU has only one young purse guard who will be Trey Stewart next season. Stewart played 11 games last season with the Cougars.
For those who watched BYU last season, one obvious weakness stands out in this group: filming the creation. BYU attempted to meet this need through the Relocation Portal.
2022 recruitment promotion (name, function)

BYU added 6’8 forward Braeden Moore at the end of the recruiting cycle. Moore, who received more than 30 competing offers, initially committed to Rutgers before backing out of that commitment and opening up recruiting.
BYU hired Farmington guard Collin Chandler earlier this year. It was a big recruiting win for the program, but it won’t help the Cougars next season. Chandler would serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before joining BYU.
Transfers 2022 (Name, Function, Eligibility)
- Rudi Williams – Garde – SO
- Jaxson Robinson – Winger – SR
- Noah Waterman – Combo – JR
As long as Mark Pope is BYU’s head coach, the transfer portal will be an important part of the program. BYU’s coaching staff has contacted dozens of players on the transfer portal over the past few months. These recruiting efforts led to Jaxson Robinson, Noah Waterman and Rudi Williams.
Missionaries returned in 2022 (name, position, aptitude)
- Dallin Hall – Garde – FR
- Richie Saunders – Garde – FR
- Tanner Toolson – Garde – FR
Coach Pope’s first recruiting class finally returns from the field. Dallin Hall, Richie Saunders and Tanner Toolson committed to BYU for Power Six schools before completing their assignments.
Time will tell how prepared these three players will be to take on meaningful roles as rookies. In football, returning first-year missionaries are usually limited due to the risk of injury. In basketball, returning missionaries still have a few months to prepare their bodies for the season.
