“This has aged so well.” “Did he throw the first pitch or the first three innings?”

Friday night was unforgettable for the Boston Red Sox. Their 28-5 blowout at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays was one of the worst losses in MLB history.

Before the game, Netflix star Sydney Sweeney had the privilege of throwing out the first pitch. The crowd at Fenway Park had no idea what was in store for them. It seemed like another hit-or-miss night synonymous with the Red Sox campaign thus far.

Some thought Sweeney’s presence would spell good luck for the Sox. It turned out to be anything but that. Of all the things that haven’t aged well in history, this one falls short.

@barstoolsports The Red Sox won’t let Sidney Sweeney anywhere near Fenway ever again.

The Blue Jays were up 10-0 through three innings, leading one fan to wonder if Sweeney pitched only the first installment or a little more.

Blue Jays outfielder Raimel Tapia hit an extraordinary grand slam inside the park, thanks to Jarren Durran’s error.

The Red Sox outfielder completely misjudged the flight path of Tapia’s hit. Durran wasn’t around when the ball bounced off the wall. The look of confusion on his face as he tried to catch was a perfect representation of Boston’s comedy of errors all night.

For anyone in a Red Sox uniform, Sweeney’s pitch was the highlight of the night, and not in a good way.

It’s painful to be a fan of the Boston Red Sox right now

It was a tough year for the Boston Red Sox even before last night. After that 28-5 humiliation, he got even worse. The Sox have now lost three straight games by embarrassing margins. Before the All-Star Game, Boston lost 14-1 and 13-2 to the New York Yankees.

Last night’s result brings their differential in the last three starts to -47, having been outscored .55-8. The Sox are now 16.5 games behind in the AL East. Of his last 10 games, he has lost seven.

Whatever your opinion of Sweeney, his first release was in no way a harbinger of things to come. The Red Sox have been downright bad this term. In any case, an embarrassment of this magnitude has been a long time coming.

At the time of this writing, the Red Sox are once again losing to the Blue Jays in their penultimate game of the three-game series. The deficit this time is 3-1 in the last sixth. A less painful score compared to last night, but the Boston Red Sox’s misery looks set to continue.
