Maryland Baseball shortstop Matt Shaw has received the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Pat Sorenti Most Valuable Player Award, the organization announced Thursday. He is the first Maryland player to win the award since Jim Norris did so in the summer of 1969.
Shaw dominated for the Bourne Braves this summer, posting a .360 batting average that matched a league-leading .432 on-base percentage and .574 hitting percentage. He also hit five home runs and added 21 stolen bases in the regular season.
Earlier in the summer, in the league All-Star game, Shaw started at second base for the West Division and faced fellow Maryland teammate Luke Shliger, who started at receiver for the East Division. Shliger plays for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
Shliger and Shaw aren’t the only two terps in Cape Town this summer. Right-handed pitcher Nigel Belgrave works with Shaw at the Braves, and infielders Kevin Keister and Nick Lorusso play side-by-side at defending champion Brewster Whitecaps.
Shaw and the Braves will be looking to win the title for the first time since 2009 as the playoffs heat up after racking up the most wins in the league in the regular season. They defeated the Harbor Hawks in Sunday’s Game 1 of the best of three Western Division Finals, aided by an RBI single from Shaw en route to a 4-3 win.
