WDuring the European Championships in Munich, a security guard is said to have shown the members of an Israeli delegation the Hitler salute. As the police reported on Wednesday, the 19-year-old was immediately arrested on Tuesday evening by a police officer who was on site and had observed the crime himself. First, “Bild” reported on the anti-Semitic incident.
According to the police, officials and athletes from Israel were in the Olympic Park to visit memorials to the terrorist attack on the Israeli national team at the 1972 Olympic Games. The 16 participants of the group walked in the area of the Hanns-Braun-Bridge.
Not far from the bridge is the Wailing Beam memorial created by the Lower Bavarian sculptor Fritz Koenig for the victims of terror. In the attack on September 5, 1972 by a Palestinian terrorist command, eleven Israeli athletes and coaches as well as a German policeman died.
State security determined
Around 7:20 p.m. on Tuesday, one of four folders from a Berlin security service was observed by the officer showing the forbidden Nazi gesture, the police reported. The delegation itself is said not to have noticed anything.
The young man, also from Berlin, was reported for using unconstitutional license plates and later released by the police. According to information from the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the native of Berlin has an Arabic name.
The state protection of the Kripo is now conducting further investigations. The suspect was excluded from all further EM events by the organizer, as were his three colleagues. Competitions in nine sports such as athletics, cycling and rowing are currently being held in Munich.
