In the youth of Hannover 96, the son of rock star Phil Collins recently laced up his shoes. Matthew Collins plays in the club’s U19 squad. The club is convinced of the footballing qualities of the young Englishman.
Not seldom does it say that the parents gave their children a talent in the cradle. In many cases that may be the case. Nicholas Collins, son of Phil Collins, plays the drums with almost as much virtuosity as his famous father. The youngest offspring of the Genesis frontman confirms that there are exceptions: Matthew Collins is considered a talented footballer.
According to “transfermarkt.de”, the 17-year-old midfielder switched from Astoria Walldorf to the U19s of Hannover 96 this summer. After the 1-1 draw in Wolfsburg at the start of the season, the Hannover team lost 0-5 to Hertha BSC. Collins Junior featured in both games but has yet to feature.
But why does the son of the world star from Great Britain play in Lower Saxony at all? Father Phil has nothing to do with the move to 96, the club said. As reported by the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung”, Collins convinced purely with his skills on the pitch. Achim Sarstedt, the club’s head of talent, confirmed that the young Englishman was “particularly noticeable” in some criteria. 96 sporting director Marcus Mann described Collins as “nimble” and “a good footballer”. According to information from BILD, the football talent lives in his own apartment in Hanover – in contrast to the other talents of the club who live in the club’s academy.
Phil Collins and Hanover
Father Phil Collins (71) has a close connection to Hanover. The famous drummer has already played twelve concerts in the state capital with Genesis, most recently last March. During a performance in the Hannoveraner Arena in 2006, the musician wore a hoodie from Hannover 96. Son Nicholas sat on the drums at the Hannover concert in 2019 in the 96 jersey. On the fringes of the performance, the Collins brothers toured the club’s academy.
A few years ago, Phil Collins spoke about his son’s love of football in an interview: “Matt loves music, but he loves football even more. He’s sure he’ll turn pro. The other day he said: Another five years and I’ll be gone. He also looks at everything, Bundesliga, French league, everything.”
