Gabriel Calderón, a former soccer player who began his career in the province, will be honored this Friday, when the Casa Salesiana Don Bosco Rawson inaugurates the Soccer Library bearing his name.
The event, promoted by “Bibliotecas Futboleas” and which will be represented by Ignacio Irigoyen, will take place in the school gymnasium starting at 10 am.
HIS CAREER AS A PLAYER
Calderón began his football career at Club Germinal, but he exploded abroad. Within Argentina, he played for Racing, Lanús and Independiente, between 1977 and 1983, to later travel to Spain and spend four solar cycles at Betis.
From 1987 to 1990 he played in France, more precisely at Paris Saint Germain. To end his career as a footballer, he did it in Switzerland, at FC Sion and later finished his career at Lausanne Sports in 1994.
ARGENTINE SELECTION
Gabriel Calderón began his time with the Argentine National Team in the 1979 Youth Soccer World Cup in Tokyo, Japan, this being the first participation of the “Albiceleste” in an under-20 competition.
In said contest, Argentina would be champion and the Chubut native started scoring 3 goals in the event, 2 against Indonesia and one against Algeria. There he was directed by César Luis Menotti and had as a partner several world stars such as Diego Armando Maradona (golden ball of the tournament), Ramón Díaz (scorer), Juan Simón, Hugo Alves, among others.
But his time at the “Albiceleste” did not end there. Calderón played the World Cups in Spain 1982 and Italy 1990.
The native of Chubut started in three games of the 1982 international event, being eliminated in the second round, while in 1990 he started from the start in the quarters and the semifinal, in addition to entering from the bench in other games.
