Judo Basics

Judo

Judo is a martial art that involves a series of three consecutive steps, or techniques. It is divided into two parts, or zones, or “patterns.” The contest area is a matted area that has a minimum 14-m-square dimension. The safety area is separate from the contest area. The mat is usually made of vinyl-covered foam, called a tatami.

Techniques

Techniques in Judo can be grouped based on their spatial zone and movement structure. Techniques in judo can be classified as forward throws, backward throws, and inward rotation techniques. Techniques can also be grouped by sustentation base.

Rank

Rank in Judo is the equivalent of an educational credential in martial arts. A black belt represents immense skill and wisdom, and a white belt represents beginner status. The rank system has spread beyond the martial arts to other fields. The term ‘black belt’ is now used as a symbol of mastery and is often seen as a symbol of success in popular culture. Among other uses, a ‘black belt’ is used to distinguish experts in the business management strategy Six Sigma.

Ethics

Ethics in Judo is a set of values that a judoka must follow. These values are derived from the founding principles of the sport. They are meant to help develop the self-control and respect necessary to become a good citizen and productive member of society. They also include the principles of humility, respect, loyalty, and discipline.

Origin

Judo has its roots in the Japanese martial arts of ancient times. Its main precursors are koryu bugai, jujitsu, and sumo. However, the advent of Western culture also played a role. Its popularity grew after the death of the samurai class, and Japanese people were increasingly attracted to martial arts from outside Japan.

Evolution

Judo’s Olympic status and its worldwide popularity have spurred evolution within the sport. In 2010 the International Judo Federation banned direct leg attacks. Its rules have changed in recent years, however, allowing for certain exceptions.
