Dayana Yastremska once again gives up shortly before losing a match at Slovenia Open – Emma Raducanu reaches second round

This wasn’t the first time Yastremska has resigned in the face of looming defeat. In January, the 22-year-old gave up in the first round duel at the Australian Open with Madison Brengle at a score of 1: 6, 6: 0, 0: 5.

In 2018, there was a similar incident at the Mexican Open. At that time, Yastremska withdrew from her opponent Mónica Puig’s match point due to an ankle injury.

Overall, she gave up no fewer than six matches in her career, always with a clear deficit – four times even during what was probably the decisive game.

Raducanu, meanwhile, advanced to the second round of the Slovenia Open after a disappointing performance at the US Open. “Obviously it’s not nice to win by giving up,” admitted the 19-year-old. “But Dayana is an extremely tough competitor so I knew it was going to be a tough fight.”

Raducanu now meets the German Anna-Lena Friedsam. The 28-year-old won 0:6, 6:4, 6:1 against the American Elizabeth Mandlik despite a completely messed up start and a 0:6, 0:3 deficit.
