The European Championships for U15 players have kicked off in Ibiza, Spain, and the Danish players had the best possible start to the tournament. All nine matches with Danish participation were won.

The Danish badminton talents were superb on the first day at the U15 EC. 200 players compete in the tournament for medals and the title of Europe’s best, eight of whom are from Denmark.

Together with the Danish U15 players, U15 national coach Thomas Nielsen is off to Spain, and he praises the players’ ability to shake off their nervousness and handle being favourites.

– Today it was mostly about feeling the hall. The players had to settle in and get the worst nervousness out of their bodies. I think they have solved that very well. They found some good play and learned to deal with being favourites, because we have been in all matches today, says Thomas Nielsen.

Thomas Nielsen particularly singles out Sarah Jeppesen in the women’s singles, who, despite losing the first set, manages to rectify the situation and take home the victory.

– Sarah Jeppesen was nervous, but manages to deal with it anyway and ends up playing a really good third set. In the second set, she also plays very well until she leads 16-12, where she almost shuts down and the opponent gets up to 16-16. Fortunately, Sarah stops and clears her head, and remembers the little things that make a difference. From there, she doesn’t look back. It’s going great, says Nielsen.

Although the U15 EC is an individual tournament, the Danish players have also cheered each other on from the stands in the hall, and that means a lot.

– It is one of the first major tournaments where there is pressure. I also think that they have landed well in that there is a good tone among the players, where you help each other and are a bit relaxed about it. It means a lot, also for us as coaches to help them through. When Danes have been on the field, the others have made sure to clap and cheer, says the U15 national coach.
