Prague – Defending champion Talent will run Velka Pardubická with number fourteen. Today’s draw for the most famous steeplechase in the Czech Republic, which will take place on Sunday, October 9, decided it. There are currently fifteen horses on his entry list. Out of the seventeen originally entered, the Irish white gelding Young Dev and Josef Váni Jr.’s ward Santa Klara, who was supposed to be the only mare in the race, were eliminated.

In addition to the eleven-year-old Talent, in whose saddle the younger Pavel Složil will be, just like last year, there is also No Time To Lose from the past winners of Velká Pardubická. The champion from 2017, who is trained by Josef Váňa Sr., will start with number one.

Unlike flat racing, however, the numbers are not that important in the obstacle races. “It certainly won’t affect the race, because it’s not from the starting boxes. They can only be important if someone wishes for a number to bring him luck,” jockey Josef Bartoš, three-time winner of the Velká Pardubická, commented at today’s press conference.

This time, Bartoš will be in the saddle of Brunch Royal, who according to the current betting odds is the second favorite after Talent. The nine-year-old horse of the Scuderia Aichner stable has not yet started in the Czech Republic. “He is a horse with successful international participation in cross-country races in France and Italy. He ran with good cross-country riders in France. He has one of the greatest qualities in the field,” said Bartoš. He is curious to see how Brunch Royal will deal with the premiere start at a distance of 6,900 meters and the demanding Pardubice plowlands, with which he has no experience. You drew a six. “It’s a number that means nothing in my life,” remarked the jockey, who managed to return to form after a serious injury in June and won the Merano Grand Prix for the fourth time in a row with L’Estran at the weekend.

After Young Dev’s check-out, the starting field will be without foreign guests. Bartoš considers fifteen participants to be the ideal number. “It’s neither too little nor too much. I’d be happy if fifteen horses were at the finish line to go through the race without injury or fall,” he said. The dark horse of the race for him is Mr. Spex. “He has already shown his quality, several times he was just behind the best,” he said. He would like his first win at Velká Pardubická to jockey Jaroslav Myšek, who will be in the saddle of the winner of the Imphal qualification in September.

This year, the 132nd edition of Velká Pardubická with Slavia pojišťovna will take place without any restrictions and will return to the five million subsidy from before the coronavirus pandemic. In the past two seasons, three million crowns were in the running.
