Previously, this type of goal was not validated. But in June 1924, the International Board modified the regulation and determined that the corner kicks are direct, instead of indirect. In this way, a goal from the corner was valid.

The story of the Olympic goal

It happened on October 2, 1924, in a friendly between Argentina and Uruguay played at the old Sportivo Barracas field. The charrúas came from being champions in the Olympic Games of Paris. In the final, La Celeste beat Swiss and became the first South American to win the gold medal.

before playing in Buenos AiresBoth teams met in Montevideo and finished 1-1. The rematch was going to take place on September 28, but it was suspended, due to the fact that the public was near the lateral lines. It should be noted that the court did not have a fence.

Four days later, with the fence in place, the second duel was played. Fifteen minutes into the first half, Cesáreo Onzari executed a corner kick and the ball entered the Uruguayan goal without anyone having touched the ball.

The visiting players were amazed and then protested to the Uruguayan referee Ricardo Vallarino. The claim was due to the fact that the goalkeeper Delicious was pushed while the ball was moving in the air. They also argued that Onzari did not intend to shoot on goal and that the wind caused the ball to enter the goal.

Most did not know the new regulations, but the judge who validated the goal did. This shout of Cesáreo Onzari remained in the history of Argentine and world football. In tribute to being the first goal in this way and against Uruguay, Olympic champion, it was baptized as “Olympic goal”.

But in 2020, a Cuban soccer blog assured that this hypothesis of the only Olympic goal is false, since previously a goal was scored from a corner. This medium cited two sources that show that the first Olympic goal was from Jose Magriña.

One of the sources is the newspaper Today newswhich is about the declaration of Juan Tunas. “The play that caused me the most emotion was the goal scored by Magriña as a result of a direct corner without anyone’s intervention,” said the former striker.

Colombian media have their doubts about the corroboration of these sources, since they were not found digitally. No photos or videos of that goal were found either. In this way, it confuses this theory that there was only one Olympic goal in the World Cups or two.
