Wilrijk district councilor Werner De Gres, who called football player Didier Lamkel Zé a ‘great ape’ on Facebook, has been fired from Atlas Copco. After Vlaams Belang had already put Werner De Gres on hold, his statement on Facebook has been given a tail. His employer, Atlas Copco, has decided to terminate his contract after he had previously received a written warning for racist remarks.
Werner De Gres came under fire after a reaction on Facebook after the match between KV Kortrijk and R. Antwerp FC. He himself expressed his regret about this. The message has also since been removed. “It happened on a whim, I’m not a racist,” he said.
“Atlas Copco has decided to end the professional partnership with Mr. Werner De Gres,” the company said through Wouter Ceulemans, President Airtec Division Atlas Copco. “This in response to racist statements on social media, for which our employee had previously received a written warning. More than fifty different nationalities work at Atlas Copco in Wilrijk. We strive for a diverse and inclusive work environment and ask our employees to work constructively together. Racism has no place in our company.” Werner De Gres himself declined to comment.
