Thousands of runners will line up for the Beijing Marathon in November after a two-year hiatus for Covid. The organizers said yesterday, as sporting events gradually return to China.
The most populous country in the world has canceled nearly all international sports competitions since Covid emerged in 2019, with the holding of the Beijing Winter Olympics in February this year, a rare exception.
They also stated that 30,000 runners could have taken part in the 26-mile (42-kilometer) route through the capital on 6 November. but only Beijing residents can register.
China is the latest major economy married to a zero-Covid policy, which represses virus flare-ups with sudden lockdowns, mass testing and lengthy quarantines.
The World Team Table Tennis Championships began last Friday in the megalopolis of Chengdu, although participants must remain in a “closed loop”, and it was announced last week that China would host the finals of the Badminton World Tour in December.
