VILLAFRANCA TIRRENA – The visually impaired judoka, Carolina Costa, has recently won the Ibsa European title in the +70 kg category and will receive the prestigious award from the National Union of Veterans of Sport. The “Unvs athlete of the year” event is organized by the “Anna Rita Sidoti” section. The award ceremony will take place on Monday 10 October, at 5.30 pm, at the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Villafranca Tirrena.

The countdown for the 2nd edition of the “Athlete of the Year Unvs Messina” event has therefore officially begun. The appointment organized by the National Union of Veterans of Sport is renewed, with the prizes awarded on the basis of the indications received from the Messina section chaired by Andrea Argento. “We have reached the second edition of an award destined to enter the collective imagination – declares Andrea Argento – as an annual anniversary awaited by Messina sportsmen. We are expanding the categories and we want to highlight certain companies that are never sufficiently celebrated, making it clear that there are great sportsmen in Messina and its province. Our intent is also to reward those who perform an important function, see sport at school ”.

The award to Carolina Costa

The visually impaired judoka Carolina Costa will receive the prestigious “Athlete of the Year” award for 2022, thus succeeding water polo player Massimo Giacoppo in the roll of honor. Born in 1994, already winner of the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, she recently won the European title in the +70 kg category at the Ibsa (International Blind Sports Federation) continental championships that took place in Cagliari, repeating the triumph three years earlier. on the tatami of Genoa.

Top Spin Messina, winner of the men’s table tennis championship, will be awarded as “club of the year”, while Atletica Villafranca, “veteran club”, for 50 years of activity. Alessio Raimondi will be celebrated in the twentieth anniversary with the title of youth hockey Italian champion.

Professor Cristina Cavaletti will receive the “Veteran Professor” award. A moment that promises to be particularly touching is the “memory award” of Pierluigi Mollica, founder and president of San Matteo Basket, two years after his tragic death. As per tradition, young athletes from our area, technicians, referees, Paralympic sportsmen and schools will also be awarded.

New testimonials for Unvs Messina

On the occasion, the two new important testimonials of the Association will be presented, who will be added to Antonino Trio and to Carolina Costa herself: the basketball player Simona Cascio, European champion with the deaf women’s national basketball team and the tank top Giovanni Ficarra, medal gold with the blue colors at the recent Absolute World Championships in Racice in two without lightweights.
