SANTIAGO.- With the aim of searching for new national women’s basketball talents, the Dominican Basketball Federation held a successful camp for children under 15 years of age with the participation of dozens of girls from the Cibao region.
The camps held in the great Cibao Oscar Gobaira arena in Santiago and the Fernando Teruel sports palace in the Olympic city of La Vega were headed by the outstanding Cuban technicians Ariel Portuondo and Alberto Zabala who observed the excellent material existing in this area of Ciba .
The experienced Cuban coaches were assisted by the veteran coach Miguel Reyes and Carlos de Jesús who instructed the young participants in various facets of the game and then culminated with inter-squad games who were surprised by the existing material in the 2008-2006 categories.
Professor Miguel Reyes highlighted the great work carried out by clubs and associations in the practices and teachings of the minor categories of women’s basketball.
Professor Ariel Portuondo from the FEDOMBAL women’s basketball technical team also addressed those present, praising the great human material that exists in the Cibao area where several of these young girls will be chosen for the national pre-selection that will represent the country in future international contests.
“We want to thank the great work of the associations of La Vega and Santiago de los Caballeros so that both clinics were given with a massive attendance of athletes from the 14 provinces of Cibao as well as for the affable treatment and hospitality for all of us who work in these camps,” he said.
On his side, the president of the Vega Basketball Association, Arnaldo Rodríguez, classified the women’s basketball talent camp for children under 15 as positive.
“This is a great initiative carried out by FEDOMBAL and its technical team to visit the interior of the country to observe the great talent that exists, which without a doubt is one of the best in the country,” added Rodríguez.
