THE NEW DAILY, SANTO DOMINGO. – With the throwing of the first ball by the historic reliever Francisco Cordero, the Leones del Esgido formally opened their 2022-2023 season this Saturday in a match as homeowners against the Tigres del Licey, at the Quisqueya stadium.
Cordero’s recognition was the highlight of the scarlet opening ceremony, which also included an exchange of flowers between Daniella Marie Castillo Staffeld, godmother of the ensemble, and her indigo pair, Ivette Guerra.
Cordero worked with the long-haired men between 1999 and 2014, and in the Major Leagues he is the historical leader in saves among Dominicans with 329, a merit that earned him his election to the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame.
In the opening ceremony, the players and coaches of both teams, included in the roster, were presented, as well as the red lineup for the day’s game.
The president of Esgido Baseball Club, Luis Manuel Bonetti, as well as the members of the Board of Directors, José Miguel Bonetti Du-Breil, Eduardo Najri and Kai Schoenhals, were also present at the season start ceremony.
For their first meeting, the long-haired men, who are seeking their 17th championship in Lidom, wore their characteristic white home club uniform, with red cursive letters with “Chosen” on the chest.
