Caroline García defeats Aryna Sabalenka and is champion of the WTA Finals

French tennis player Caroline García was proclaimed champion of the WTA Finals with a victory of 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Aryna Sabalenka.

Garcia, sixth in the world ranking, she became the second Frenchwoman to win this season-ending tournament. The first was Amelie Mauresmo in 2005.

There was only one break point in a duel between tennis leaders in aces. García leads the tour in this category, while Sabalenka led the contest.

Garcia converted that break point in the first game of the second set. He ended up foisting seventh-ranked Sabalenka on just her third loss in 12 career hard-court finals.

Garcia’s decisive shot came with her on serve. Sabalenka sent a very long backhand shot.

Garcia fell backwards onto the track. and put his fists to his eyes.

“There’s definitely a lot of joy and happiness,” Garcia told reporters an hour later, still wearing the Texas hat and next to the trophy. “It was a crazy final, with a lot of intensity at every point from the start.”
