Javier Barrios and Daniela Corchón signed one of the most memorable badminton performances from Soriano in the framework of the Spanish U17 Championship that was held in the town of Villanueva de la Vera in Cáceres last weekend.
The players, belonging to the Soria-CS24 Badminton Club youth team, won a silver medal and a bronze medal for badminton from Soria, which confirms the good work of the club from the capital.
For Javier Barrios, obtaining this runner-up in Spain is the culmination of a brilliant career that only lacked a medal in a major championship. A regular on the podium in the national Masters since the sub11 category, a long injury in 2019 forced him to face a tough recovery process that, in addition to truncating his options in the upcoming championships, forced him to overcome this period in the middle of the development phase. in his training phase as a player.
In the Spanish sub17 championship last weekend, Javier started as the third seed in the individual draw. Focused exclusively on this modality, the man from Soriano had to overcome rivals of Galician, Basque, Andalusian and Aragonese origin to meet Ramón Rovira from the Balearic Islands in the final. In the first set, Javier did not develop his best badminton, however he reacted in the second game until he was at 15-11 that he could not materialize the comeback, thus giving up the match.
This silver medal won in the tough men’s singles modality is the first in this modality for Soriano badminton, to which was added the bronze medal won by Daniela Corchón in the women’s doubles draw.
Daniela searched hard throughout the season to qualify for the three modalities, a fact that she achieved when she had to face a competition with great physical exhaustion.
The glory for the young woman from Soria came in the female double modality together with Lucía Sejas from Madrid. She was an individual medalist in the sub15 championship last season, in her first campaign in the category she has managed to win the bronze medal. Without starting as favourites, the key match to gain access to the podium was against the number three seeded couple, the Galicians Clara and Paula Hernán.
The Soriana-Madrid couple won comfortably in two sets after which they faced an Andalusian couple, who proved superior, winning in the semifinals by a double 21-15.
Daniela completed her excellent competition with a fifth place in the women’s individual category. With these results, Daniela confirms her excellent level and places her as one of the benchmarks in the sub17 category in the 2023 season.
Both players were accompanied by coach Víctor Ortega who designed the preparation for the season to face this competition at the highest level of form.
With one of the great objectives of Club Badminton Soria-CS24 fulfilled, both young players will focus their careers in the short term on becoming key pieces of their club in the national first division league that will be held in the first leg of next season. .
In addition to this top-level competition, several Sorianos competed in Durana, Vitoria, where a scoring event was held for the national ranking in the absolute category.
Nora Martínez from the Soria-CS24 Badminton Club stood out from the rest of the players, who won the women’s double with her clubmate, Ana Peñaranda, and with the silver medal in the individual.
In the doubles box they were clearly superior to their rivals without having excessive problems to win the final by 21-10 and 21-13.
Nora, took the silver individually. Having the player number eight in the national ranking as a rival, the match lasted until a third set with a result of 21-18 in this final round.
