Italian referee Daniele Orsato will officiate the match Argentina vs Croatia in the semifinals World Cup 2022.
Orsato is a referee with high flying hours in European competition. In the 2022/2023 season, Orsato took charge of dozens of matches, which included Serie A, Serie B, UEFA Nations League and Champions League matches. Orsato was also recorded as officiating in the Saudi Arabian league match.
In the 13 games officiating since the start of this season, Orsato has never been shown a straight red card. The only red card issued after he gave two yellow cards in the sixth week of the Italian Serie A League match between Bologna and Fiorentina.
Last season, Orsato, who was the judge in 29 matches, also never gave a direct red card.
However, that does not mean Orsato is allergic to red cards. In the 2020/2021 season, there have been five yellow cards in 33 matches led by the 47-year-old referee.
Reporting from Transfermarkt, Orsato has refereed 550 times in various competitions and issued 2,589 yellow cards, 76 indirect red cards and 64 direct red cards.
In addition, Orsato also decided 144 penalties throughout his career.
The man who received the best referee award from the IFFHS football institute in 2020 is no stranger to fierce matches.
Some of the matches he has led are the last 16 matches in the 2018/2019 Champions League when Manchester United met PSG. In that match Orsato issued six yellow cards for MU and four yellow cards for PSG.
Orsato also represented the black shirt corps in the 2020 Champions League final match between PSG vs Bayern Munich.
Having received a FIFA referee license since 2010, Orsato has only officiated at this year’s World Cup. The man from Vicenza also only took part in the European Cup once last year.
At this year’s World Cup, Orsato has led two matches. The opening match of the grand event in Qatar between the hosts and Ecuador became Orsato’s first stage in the tournament every four years.
After that, Orsato also took charge of the match when Argentina won 2-0 over Mexico in the group stage.
The referee gets special attention in the quarter-finals. Argentina and Portugal both questioned the referee in the match.
